The Road Home – Stephen Paulus
Text by Michael Dennis Browne
Performed by The Singers - Minnesota Choral Artists & Matthew Culloton
Released on Splendid Jewel: Choral Music of Stephen Paulus

Text
Tell me, where is the road
I can call my own,
That I left, that I lost,
So long ago?
All these years I have wandered,
Oh, when will I know
There's a way, there's a road
That will lead me home?

After wind, after rain,
When the dark is done.
As I wake from a dream
In the gold of day,
Through the air there's a calling
From far away,
There's a voice I can hear
That will lead me home.

Rise up, follow me,
Come away, is the call,
With the love in your heart
As the only song;
There is no such beauty
As where you belong:
Rise up, follow me,
I will lead you home.

This piece somehow found me after years of vaguely remembering it from high school choir and man does it hit different as a struggling adult out on my own. I do really miss that warm fuzzy feeling I got when I was singing in a group like that.

It’s 4 am, it’s cold outside, I can’t sleep, and I’m listening to this music for the first time. At the same time that I can’t stop crying, I feel like my soul has been deeply healed.

I sang this in 2015 in the Normandy American Cemetery in France, in front of over 2000 graves of soldiers who died on D-Day. I promise you there was not one dry eye in the audience. Hope we were able to bring the spirits of the perished soldiers home. They had left the US long enough.

I was so happy to hear this beautiful song being sung at Jimmy Carter's funeral. It deserves national attention...so lovely. It has never failed to bring tears to my eyes.

I had never heard this song until I heard it being sung at President Jimmy Carter's funeral on Thursday. I looked it up here and began to read the lyrics as the song played. I have shared this song many times since Thursday. I felt tears running down my face as I remembered standing by each of my parents' death beds. I am certain that they heard the voice of their Savior calling each of them home, as I hope to hear for myself one day. My Savior is Faithful and True. Bless Him forever!

I'm originally from Texas and have been living/working overseas since 2014. This song reminds me of the good times, family and friends back home :)

Sung at President James Earl Carter Jr.'s funeral January 9, 2025. Moved me to tears. Fitting tribute to an honorable man. RIP President Carter.

This is the definitive recording of this piece. In fact, every song on their "Splendid Jewel" album is the pinnacle of Paulus perfection.

Does it bother anyone that the recording is 20bpm slower than the marked tempo. I know the marked tempo is a bit to fast but I feel like the recording is still 5-10 bpm slow than it should be.

my true Home seems so far away, and i ask myself sometimes, "what is the purpose of this painful journey so far away from Home?". but yet here i am, anyways.

There is a "correct" way to do this piece. And then there is the a way a computer would do it. Hey! Y'all got all of the notes right!
