Grade 5 Digital Music Theory Exam | ABRSM Grade 5A Question 4. Counting Interval.

This is a video guiding you how to make the right choice for multiple choice question in the latest digital music theory exam, in counting interval.

I introduce the 4-step method that can be used for all kind of interval questions, by sticking to the 4 steps you will be able to figure out the answer easily as the test papers like to twist and turn the way they ask, such as giving you two notes and need you to figure out the interval or giving you the interval but need you to write out the note above the given bass note.

There is a chart that can help you to identify the answers accurately, the reason why I dont encourage to use the relationship of key to find answer is because some questions contain notes with double sharps or double flats, it tends to be very confusing if you relate the double sharps or double flats with relationship of keys. So the interval chart I recommend is useful for all kind of interval questions no matter what the format they are going to use.

Hope you find this tutorial useful.

This is to reply to Junog7854. As a teacher we totally understand why, because when we count on the satve, C itself is counted as 1 step, so C to D is 2nd apart. But on the keyboard if we dont count C itself as 1 step, many young kids will get confuse, to avoid confusion we tell kids that on the keyboard C to D is 3 keytones instead of 2. This is for the convenient and consistency in teaching younger kids to avoid confusion. If you prefer to count it as 2 semitones, then it's your own decision which is also fine. Then u can wrtie down on the interval chart that Major 2nd is 2 semitones for your own understanding. I hope this explain what we think at the point of view of piano teacher who teaches many kids who always confuse with this topic. I think what Jenny offer here is a good solution.

Anyway thanks for asking this, it's a good question. I also would like to share my opinion to everyone.

Regards, Gao

M2 has two semitones...
Not 3 semitones.
Am I correct?
Ex- c-c# =1 s. T
C#- D = 1 s. T
