Verbs - English Parts of Speech

A verb is simply a word which describes an action, state or occurrence. Words like 'see', 'look' and 'watch' are all verbs as they describe actions we do with our eyes. Words like 'have' are also verbs, as they describe states or long-term occurrences. Every language in the world has a huge range of verbs to be able to talk about all the complex things human beings and other things do.

A verb is almost always used with a subject, to indicate clearly who is doing the action, or sometimes who the action is being done to. Furthermore, verbs can take on multiple different forms. The most common verb forms are the infinitive, present simple, past simple, past participle and present participle. In total, there are twelve English tenses. This sounds like a lot to remember, but once you learn the classifications it's not too difficult. First, we can divide the tenses into three time periods, the past, the present and the future. Each of these time periods is further broken down into 4 categories: Simple, continuous, perfect, and perfect continuous. If we do some quick mental maths, we can work out that if there are 3 time periods, and each has 4 categories, that's 3x4, which gives us twelve tenses! The English tenses are most commonly used to express WHEN an action happened, happens or will happen. Depending on the time, we must change tenses. How do the verb forms connect to the tenses? Well, each tense has a specific structure, and these structures require you to use a specific verb form if you want to be accurate.

There are also some unique types of verbs, which have their own special rules. Some of the most common are modal verbs, auxiliary verbs and non-continuous verbs.
