ATINATI: SIGHNAGI – GEORGIA

Sighnaghi, with its breath-taking beauty is one of the old cities in Kakheti region. Located on the bank of the Alazani river the town overlooks the Alazani Valley and faces the Greater Caucasus mountains. Built by local population back in 17th century, the city captures visitors’ eyes by its narrow cobblestone streets, red-tiled houses, colourful balconies with wooden ornaments overlooking streets.

Sighnaghi is distinguished by its extraordinary terrace-type architecture, walled with the remnants of 18th-century fortifications. Its charm is due to both the architectural look formed over ages and the natural location.

Sighnaghi has been named “the city of love” with many couples visiting it just to get married. The City is rich by tourist attractions- ancient Orthodox churches and archaeological-ethnographic museum. Sighnaghi Museum has a permanent exhibition of the renowned Georgian self-taught artist Niko Pirosmani. Museum exhibits numerous Georgian artifacts that reflect Kakheti’s rich culture and history.
