Learn how to troubleshoot a 4-20 loop with a Fluke Clamp Meter.

Bob from Fluke walks you through how to troubleshoot your 4-20 loop without disconnecting the wires. Using a Fluke 773 Milliamp Clamp Meter you can take the measurement without breaking the loop.

The Fluke 773 milliamp clamp meter is accurate and versatile. It saves time and money by measuring 4–20 mA signals five times faster than with traditional DMMs, and without breaking the loop. That means you can troubleshoot a live device without having to power down and possibly miss something going on in the process.

A "tip" involves techniques and materials which are simple, cheap and easily available. I'm sure that clampmeter is not cheap and very few people/companies own one.
