If I can add something, the concepts of assimilation and rehabilitation are not part of Levi Strauss' Tristes Tropiques. But there is a rough idea for neutralization: Here is a rough translation (I have it in Spanish) of the reference from Tristes Tropiques: "Studying them from the outside, one is tempted to contrast two types of societies: those that practice anthropophagy, that is, those that see in the absorption of certain individuals possessing fearsome forces the only means of neutralizing them and even of taking advantage of them, and those that, like ours, adopt what could be called anthropoemia (from the Greek emeín, "to vomit")." It is found in chapter 38 "a glass of rum".

I work in a lock down ward (as well in the larger hospital that serves outpts). the patients in lock down must be confined as they are all suicidal and/or violent to others. the punitive society at large creates these ailments to begin with. my assessment is that obedient neurotic conformists leading a "normal" life are just one nervous breakdown away from being on the other side of the nursing station. we have a society of normal neurotics maintaining the status quo that produces the pathology within the psychotics who are simply the neurotics that have broken through that first layer. so many of the nurses in this ward are like zombies themselves, zombies drugging up zombies.

I taught in a prison. Inmates told me 10% of the people there should never be released. If the police don't seem to be working hard enough to catch a murderer, there will be an uproar in the community, because we don't want them to operate among us. It is more nuanced than Foucault implies.
