US Highway 395: Owens Valley (Independence to Bishop)

We ride north on US 395 as it traverses the arid Owens Valley on the eastern side of the Sierra Nevada; we start in the town of Independence and end in Bishop. In the community of Big Pine, the Californa Highway 168 joins with US 395 en route to Bishop.

The Owens Valley is among the deepest valleys, wedged between the highest peaks of the Sierra Nevada and the Inyo and White Mountains to the east. The rain shadow leaves most of the valley a dry, desert environment. The Owens River, an which runs through the valley, has been heavily tapped as a main water supply for Los Angeles, which makes the valley even drier. Nonetheless, it is quite beautiful, as is US 395.

I recently took the old US 6 alignment all the way to Ely then down 93 to Caliente and Vegas. The scenery from Palmdale and the next 1000 miles evolves subtlety. This is part of a huge basin that has no natural outlet to the ocean and is nearby the highest and lowest elevations in the lower 48. What an amazing part of the world. Didn't make it out to Mono lake but I highly recommend a visit in the winter.

These road trips are great. One I would like to see is along I-95 from the entry into New York City to arrival on the upper level of the George washington Bridge.. It has the perfect climax as you exist the long underpass of "the Apartments" and see those huge support spires. I've made that trip several dozen times. It is great either in daylight or in the dark lit only by man-made lighting of the builidings and vehicles. A mix of cityscapes and flat country with a clipactic finish
