Part of our series on on Ferrocerium Tinder Tricks: using ferrocerium fire starters with natural and man-made tinder.

Jute is a great tinder for spark based fire lighting. I like to cut it into 6 inch lengths and soak it in wax. However it is pretty much waterproof just by itself. Most plant fibers, as well as Jute, readily ignite and are among the easier tinders available.

I never thought of using it as a match, lol.. I have a video on my chanel for the Exotac PolyStriker XL using different elements for fire starting, one being jute twin. However, I like your ferro rod so much, I'm may have to order a few, lol...!

Why waste time fluffing the jute into a big ball? Just fray the end by scraping the back of the tip of your knife blade across it a couple times, hit it with a spark, it'll burst into flame, and then you use that to light a candle which you've cleverly put in your pocket. Lights even wet sticks, and if you use one of those trick birthday candles you can't blow out, even wind won't defeat you. You can wet your fingertips and pinch out the burning tip of the jute. During the entire process, you only end up using about a half inch of the twine.
