Sounds like a tactic they use to pressure people to buy. Good on you for standing your ground.

Not that this has anything negative to say about your experience, just that I had an experience from the other side of the counter. Back in the early 90's I was manager of a camera store in Costa Mesa, CA and had a lady who came in looking at Hasselblad cameras. I spent over an hour with her pointing out the differences, answering questions, showing her how everything on the camera operated, even went into the office to bring her out a chair to sit on after noticing her leaning on the glass counter and looking a little uncomfortable, like her legs were hurting her. Went back again for a cup of water for her when she asked if we had a drinking fountain, we did but it was back in the office. So after this she pulls out a camera magazine and compares our price to one of the NYC mailorder places. We were selling the camera, lens etc for the exact same price. She says she'll buy it and I write it up and as I'm totalling everything, figuring sales tax and writing down the total she says "I don't have to pay sales tax at the New York store" and tries to talk me out of over a hundred dollars in sales tax. I tell her there's nothing I can do. I have to add the tax. So she walks away, doesn't even thank me for spending all that time with her, just leaving me shaking my head and going to help another customer who had been waiting patiently for me to help them. I wasn't thinking happy thoughts right then but I think the other customer was more p*ssed off at her than I was since they'd been waiting to talk with me for awhile.

lol.. some of you know where I'm going with this... yep. 😃 I've walked away many a times. I do think according to the Databases, it generally has ROM 31 as the second with X-Men 158 as the third though I think both came out in June of '82. Plus ROM 31 gets you the third appearance of Destiny.

I’ve been in that exact situation a few times. I feel your pain.

I've been picking up Uncanny books like crazy the past month and have had two experiences that started off like what you describe but went in opposite directions. The first was almost exactly as you described but after I told him that I can't know what I'm going to buy until I know the prices he kept guilting me so I looked at him and just turned around and walked out. The other one went the opposite way where he priced them all (online lookup) at the register but fairly and we then cut a deal. I put a few aside and he was fine with it, and kept telling me why I should come back for more (in a nice, not aggressive, way). Customer service is becoming a lost art but does still exist.

I’ve had this same experience multiple times. some store owners like to think they’re in a position of power, but you’re the one holding the money. never give into peer pressure. you called him on his grift.

I can’t believe stores are still doing that...at least he was using over street, you can probably find some huge scores because of that!

Customer experience is essential.
If the owner has no time for me and no patience, I will not return to that LCS. As a customer, I get to decide who I want to give my money to. Here in Montreal, we have lots of choices when it comes to LCS, so it's easy to leave and go to an other shop.

This situation has happened to me once.
But the owner took the time to look at the books, we discussed the prices and often, hw would lower the price of a comic book to meet my "offer". Our transaction was made out of mutual respect. This is key. They understand that I'm spending my money, and I understand they got to make a profit.

If I felt "shamed" or "bullied" as you did, I would have done the exact same thing. And will never go back there.

Unbelievable! Dealers still use Overstreet???!!! LOL! I agree with the commenters here...if a dealer ANYWHERE does not grade and/or price the books ahead of time I just walk away. Not worth bothering!

The same thing happened to 😂!!! And I only bought 1/8th of what I brought up 🤣.

Thank you for talking about this. Maybe more owners will learn.

A couple of years ago I visited an LCS while traveling on business. I found a few unpriced comics I wanted, plus one that did have a price. I brought 'em up to the counter, and the first one the guy looked at was the priced one. He said, and I quote, "we must have priced this one on half-price day or something; I'm going to have to look it up."

At that point I realized, "any price tags I encounter here are meaningless."

I went ahead and bought most of the stuff I'd selected, because they were beater copies of reprint titles and the prices I was quoted were not insane. But I ain't ever going back.

I think you may have missed out on buying books with no price. When you notice a book you want and it has no price then YOU look it over to determine what you are willing to pay for it. When the seller tells what he wants for it you should counter his price and state your reason. If the seller won't deal this way then it is up to you to decide if you want to do business there. Normally, when a book has no price, it signals the seller is willing to bargain; you should never do business with a seller who tells you a firm price only after you get to the cash register.

Lol 😆🤣 you are to nice man.. if he would of looked at the comic book with out taking out the plastic and said this is near mint i would of said your full it buddy !!! And walk out the store and never return because that kind of thing to me is a hustle to take your money 💰and takes the fun of comic book shopping 🛍to me.

There's a Comic + Coin shop in Kirkland WA - they don't have pricing on ANY of their back issues. I bought a few DD and that's it - won't be back. It's ludicrous...you HAVE to price your books correctly before I even walk in the door. Period. Managing your inventory is part of owning/ operating a comic shop.

That's always frustrating. Whenever I visit a new store I say hello to the staff, explain it's my first time there, and ask how the back issues are priced (among other things). If a store prices back issues the way you described, I don't even waste the time. I'll look around for a bit but definitely changes how I approach the situation and how much time I spend there.

Great video! I'm doing a similar one soon based on an LCS interaction. I like how you handled it!

I have a vintage collectibles shop near me that has you leave the books at the counter and then they call you to come back, often days later. Excuse me? I want to buy them now! If you have them out for display, they should be priced!

Great info. Thanks for sharing your haul. 9 times out 10 usually just walk out of the shop when I realize they have to waste my time looking up issue prices.
