A Massachusetts Air National Guard member who has emerged as a main person of interest in the disclosure of highly classified military documents on the Ukraine war was taken into custody Thursday by federal agents.
Jack Teixeira, a member of the intelligence wing of the Massachusetts Air National Guard, was taken into custody "without incident" at a residence in North Dighton, Massachusetts, on Thursday afternoon, the FBI said in a statement.
The investigation is ongoing, and the FBI said its agents were continuing "to conduct authorized law enforcement activity at the residence."
U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland said Teixeira was arrested "in connection with an investigation of alleged unauthorized removal, retention and transmission of classified national defense information."
Under the Espionage Act, the unauthorized removal, retention and transmission of classified documents is a federal crime punishable by up to 10 years in prison.
