You don't need to paint your kitchen cabinets white, like everyone else seems to be doing. I recently used Benjamin Moore Stone Hearth on my kitchen cabinets, and I'll tell you exactly why and how I came to that decision.

I designed kitchens for 15 years. I love white cabinets and find them fresh and uplifting. Having said that, I find that people will put in a white kitchen not realizing that it can make the rest of their house look drab by comparison. This is especially true of older homes that do not have white trim. It is my opinion that the "feel" of your home should be uniform throughout. That is what I find most pleasing. Whatever style you choose, whatever color you choose, keep the "feel" consistent.

I like white. It’s clean. I keep my kitchen white so it looks clean. I’m glad you were able to match your backslash.

Looks nice in your space James. I still love my white cabinets. Just love the classic feeling of a white kitchen.

I just started painting over my white cabinets. The previous owners painted over from what I can tell was a patchwork of Robin's egg blue, orange and merlot. They didn't sand or prime and painted right over the hinges. "Slap dash" is perfect description.
It is going to take what feels like forever to fix but it'll be worth it.

Would have liked this video a lot more if you actually let us see the whole kitchen

I’m currently painting my upper cabinets a warm white. I can’t remember if it’s called snowball or snowman or snowdrift. Anyway, I have a really low ceiling from the 70’s and a relatively small kitchen so it felt so closed in. Especially, for my tall self. The bottom cabinets are intense teal because it’s fun. The walls are a light gray that I can’t remember the name of. The colors all have a deep gold and maroon tones in them to work with the existing countertops so I don’t have to update those. I think the white looks great in the space and I don’t feel like the upper cabinets are closing in on me anymore. Design tip: go with what you like and screw everyone else. 😜

In the past I always turned my nose up at white cabinets. After all hubs is a master carpenter & wood lover. We moved into my childhood home & Mom had dated oak cabinets that made the kitchen dark. We painted them in BM Simply White. Now…I will always have white cabs. The kitchen is so bright & looks clean, fresh. We’re building new & yes I’m putting in white cabs!😊
I do like what you did with your kitchen. It pulls together nicely.

My white kitchen cabinets match the white stove, white refrigerator and white dishwasher in my small kitchen. Pops of colour in countertop accessories. Easy to keep looking clean.

I painted the upper cabinets in Chantilly Lace and the bottom in Hale Navy, both from Benjamin Moore, which matches the trim around my condo. The result is a clean and modern, yet timeless look.

I have white cabinets with shaker doors. I still love white. I agree that your color choice looks great with that granite countertop that you have.

I am married to the idea of white cabinets in my kitchen.

Benjamin Moore Simply White!

For Pete sakes only a few centuries ago there were few options for your kitchen.

If people want to have other colour cabinets... fine.

99% of the time when I watch a decorating show what The Decorator shows as a good example... I think it looks nice.

Your beige cabinets look nice.

I don't want beige colour in my personal home.

I appreciate that you used what was already in your kitchen for one other reason... renovations are putting a lot of materials into landfills! cabinetry can sometimes be salvaged and donated to a place like Habitat for Humanity Restore, but I'm not sure how often that's done. (Maybe it's not worth the time to de-install it that carefully?) And I'm pretty sure that backsplashes go straight into the garbage.

OK I’m only a minute in and I can say that last week I painted my cabinets white lol. I still have to do the island and I am going to go with a color called swimming by Sherwin-Williams so there’s a little bit of interest there 😃

Loved the personal side of your choice, and the reason why. Very helpful. Thanks as always.

Great info. I chose benjamin moore opal for my kitchen and diningroom walls. Then chartreuse for the kitchen cabinets. The counters are butcher block maple, and the door pulls are matte black. We have stainless appliances and I am leaning towards a hammered steel backsplash.

Very nice. BTW, hearth is pronounced like harth. It doesn't rhyme with earth.

I like the theme of this video, however it's impossible to get a lock on whether or not this color works with the rest of the kitchen (black subway tile backsplash, and countertops). Not showing the entire kitchen with the Stone Hearth colored cabinets, backsplash, and drawer hardware didn't really help viewers get the pulse of whether or not it's a cohesive aesthetic.

Beautiful paint job! Can you talk more in depth about the step-by-step method of how to achieve a smooth finish for oak???

Literally every new or renovated home has a white kitchen, white subway tile, and massive open lanterns pendants. I recently built and many of the subs that came in said they love what I chose because all they ever see is white!

Hi James...I had oak color cabinets painted Benj Moore's Simply White as are all the walls in our townhome painted as well. White kitchens are not a trend. If you look at pictures from decades ago, white was standard. In fact it was unheard of to paint a cabinet a dark color. We did our rental condo cabinets in a Benj Moore khaki shade, (i believe it was Carrington something) and they were gorgeous! I am loving the shade you used in that kitchen. I will be keeping your Stone Hearth (Hearth is pronounced "harth" and not "herth") in mind and get a chip so I can remember it for the future. You're so right. You can still get a light shade that isn't stark! Much has to do with how much natural light your kitchen gets. Yours still has a crisp look to it and I love it! Great job!
