Purple for emperors from insects & plants? You apparently don't know that it was a very rare color due to its other source. A certain sea snail the Murex, that grew in the Eastern Mediterranean in Phoenicia, ( later Lebanon)gave the
" Imperial Purple" color after harvest & treatment. That's why it was reserved for Rome's Caesars & later royalty...

I don't think it was at all fortunate that the Bishop survived in the one case. Since the guy of whom the Bishop promised freedom if he confessed, was not given freedom and instead was tortured with the Spanish Boot, it was not at all fortunate that the Bishop survived. The Bishop sounds like a jerk. However, that was pretty typical for the time period. More concerned about enriching themselves and their church. Some things never change.
