Adrian Rogers: How to Pray in the Spirit (1975)

Scripture Passage: Romans 8:26-27

As Christians, prayer is our greatest privilege, yet our greatest failure. Knowing this, God has given us a Helper: the Holy Spirit. Because we are up against the world, the flesh and the devil, it is crucial that we know how to pray in the Spirit.

Romans 8:26-27 says, “Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities, for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit Himself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. And He that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, for He maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God.”

The Spirit activates our will to pray. Our flesh resists prayer; but the Holy Spirit in us recognizes God for who He is, and reignites our will to pray.

The Spirit animates our bodies to pray. When our minds wander and grow weary, we must yield to the Holy Spirit and receive His energy and power.

The Spirit adapts our requests. Sometimes we’re not sure how to pray; but, glory to God, the Holy Spirit is the ultimate transformer. Simply pray with a clean heart, and He will adapt our prayers.

The Spirit administrates our access to God.

Ephesians 2:18 says, “For through Him we both have access by one Spirit unto the Father.”

God has given us the royal invitation to pray, and the Holy Spirit is our guide into the throne room.

The Spirit articulates our words. The Holy Spirit understands our groans and wordless heartache. Even when we don’t have the vocabulary to express our thoughts, God knows our hearts.

The Spirit enunciates our confidence. We know that God works all things together for the good of those who love Him. (Romans 8:28) His plans are for our holiness, not our happiness.

The Spirit amplifies our victory.

When we pray in the flesh, we are no match for Satan; but when we pray in the Spirit, we remember: if God is for us, who can stand against? (Romans 8:31)

Apply it to your life
Prayer is warfare; have you prayed in the Spirit today?

Adrian Rogers says, “The Holy Spirit wants to think through our minds and speak through our lips; He wants to weep through our eyes and groan through our spirits. It is the Holy Spirit in the human spirit, together with and instead of.”

Its so true! I pray at the drop of a hat. Im liable to break out in prayer at any moment! I prefer to talk to God than anyone else. Is this natural? Absolutely not. Its the Holy Ghost bringing this about in me and thru me. People that struggle with prayer, dont beat yourself up over it. Pray to the Lord for help with it and submit to the Spirit. The Lord will help you with it. He wants to help you. God bless you all!

Man I have been in those desperate deepest darkest moments in prayer. When I feel weak spiritually and physically. Where I fall to the ground and weep and not understand what is happening to me or around me. But man. I FEEL POWER! Like it’s supernatural and I cannot express it in words! It’s full of love! And such compassion my brothers and sisters! GOD KNOWS OUR HEARTS, GOD WILL TAKE US THROUGH THE VALLEYS OF DEATH! BUT EVEN THEN WE SHALL NOT FEAR NO EVIL BECAUSE JESUS! IS WITH US! HALLELUJAH!

Hallelujah! Quicken my mortal body Lord! I yield to your precious Holy Spirit, surrendering my will. Not my will Jesus but your will be done in me. Ignite me with your kingdom and power. Whenever I am weak, you strengthen me. Deposit your kingdom within my soul. Lord, I am nothing without you. I delight to do your will. I am your child, needing your guidance through the storms of life. Thank you for the Gift of the Holy Spirit, praying through me, becoming one with you, sweet Yeshua/Jesus. As soon as I wake early in the morning, as a young child, I lift my hands knowing that you will lift me out of despair and uncertainty. Continue to lead me in all truth, protecting me from evil. Thank you Father for watching over me during the night. Thank you for such sweet sleep. Bless the Lord oh my soul and all that is within me. Continue to bless our leaders and cities who are committed to your will being down right here on earth as it is in heaven. Thank you for shelter, food and clothing. Lord please forgive me for taking you for granted. You have searched my heart and you know what I need before I ask. Hallelujah. Thank you Jesus. You are my hiding place. ABBA FATHER, through you Jesus I am refreshed daily. To God be the Glory here in the United States of America. In Jesus Holy name. Amen 🇺🇸🙏

Yes Lord, mothers are groaning waiting for your redeeming Grace to cover them and their children, that the evil one is trying to devour. Protect these innocent children from harmful people who know you not. Lord we have repented in Spirit and Deed. We are your peculiar people. Keep us as the apple of your eye. You are working everything out for our good. Thank you Father. I love you and adore your way, Yahweh. 🙏

When I am praying I catch myself thanking about things I want to do and I have to get back to talking with God. I always ask him to forgive me for letting my mind wonder away and to help me to focus on him.

My only prayer request these days is for my city and province. I'm praying that the Lord will put things up straight, or at least normal-ish, which is as close as humanity's been since the fall. And that's on a good day.

I've heard tell GOD IS IN CONTROL, but when we look around sometimes, it seems hard to believe. (2 Cor 5:7)

As to Adrian's 'yelling' at God, I think we've all been there in desperate times. I call 2022 THE YEAR OF THE RANT because I spent a LOT of my prayer time begging God to fill me in, *"WHAT are YOU DOING?!"* Pastor Charles Stanley (Now with the Lord) insisted that trials and tribulations draw us closer to God. I wish I could have told him, "No sir. Sometimes, the constant wave of trials and tribulations only draw on closer to a nervous breakdown."

That is the best explanation of Prayer I have ever heard.
