If you just leave the door open when it's not in use (instead of closing it) you'll never have any smell either. I close mine only when I'm using it, nearly 15 years later...still no smell.

"I like front load washers", yeah that's because you fix appliances for a living.

When purchasing appliances I’ve always found that the inexpensive ones without the bells and whistles last the longest.

Speed Queen top loader 🙌! Who wants to buy a washing machine that you have to wash in order to wash clothes?

I used to work for Electrolux, you are dropping straight facts about why they stink and how to keep it from getting stinky to begin with. Cheers, J.

After every load we keep the door open so it can air dry.

Also never close your door after a wash! Leave the door open so it can air out and water can dry!!

Per your instructions for a front load washer, I stopped using so much detergent, used those washer cleaning tabs, and now my machine never ever has smells or problems. Thanks man

There is a very easy fix for this, just make sure to always leave the door open when you're not using the washing machine. Water can evaporate that way and it'll never smell bad!

Too much trouble. I’ll stick with top loaders

I own a commercial laundry, a launderette and was a washing machine service engineer for 10 years so I have a fairly good handle on this subject.

Users have a perception that more is better when it comes to dosing washing machines with detergent. This is not the case of course as water only has a limited ability to suspend solids-this both dirt and detergent (think the glass of warm water/salt experiment you likely did at school). The repeated over-dosing of chemicals causes a residual build up in the machine, which in turn causes the smell. We don’t have this problem in the laundry as the machines are auto-dosed with carefully controlled quantities of the various chemicals we use, and as such we achieve the necessary results without wasting chemicals and causing machine damage-not so crucial when the domestic user is doing 5 washes a week, but when that number is 1500 a week it becomes relevant.
So, cut down on the detergent however you administer it (liquid or powder). Oh, and leaving the door open is a good tip, as mentioned by another commenter

Maytag old style washer will never give you issue for years

My top load washer has worked without stinking or disassembly to clean since the 90s. Why buy trouble? Top load for life.

Love mine. I always leave the door open and the dispenser part open after using. It helps so it can dry out.

I bought a washer and dryer set of 1983 Maytag's in 1988. The top load washer lasted over 25 year's. There were no replacement parts, so I bought another older model Maytag. I am still using the same dryer made in 1983. I never use fabric softener and I only use liquid detergent.

Everything works longer if you take care of it. My mom has a 20+year old Miele front load washer never had it fixed runs like new

"if you let pools of water sit in there it's gonna get stagnant and it's the perfect place to breed mold"

If pools of water sit in there the washing machine has a design problem.
