Ron Howard: When Andy Griffith quit the No. 1 show on TV

Ron Howard fondly remembers his father Rance, who doubled as his personal acting coach. Plus, Ron’s brother Clint Howard joins the conversation and paints a picture as to how their father politely challenged Andy Griffith and helped shape the depth of Opie Taylor as Ron’s character on “The Andy Griffith Show.” Later, Ron remembers when Andy Griffith took center stage at an end-of-season wrap party and announced his departure from the show, plus the warm embrace of a cast reunion nearly 20 years later that validated his childhood emotions.

The Andy Griffith Show is still as great today as it was then. The show is a timeless classic.

What a life Ron has lived. Acting in show biz as a child star, and actually transitioning into not just a director but one of the greatest.

It's nice to see that Ron fared much better than most child actors. So many tragic cases over the years.

If everyone could have parents like Ron & Clint Howard's, the world would be such a better place.

I wrote Rance Howard many years ago, not only did he respond but he sent me 5 autographs, all in different color pens. A really nice and genuine man

One of the best series in TV. I wish our country was like this again. So simple. 😉👍

I have ALWAYS said Ron Howard (in "The Andy Griffith Show") was THE SINGLE BEST "child actor" I have ever seen on TV. After watching this, knowing his talent (of course) and NOW hearing how his FATHER was right there, every scene coaching and assisting... I think I have a much better insight into his fantastic performances on that TV show so many years ago. Thank you!

It is wonderful to hear Ron giving his father Rance the credit he deserves for his work with him and Clint, as well as his influence with Andy and the AGS team. It is also worth noting that they also had the good sense to listen to him.

Probably one of the ten best television shows of all time. It STILL is fantastic to watch. I LOVED all of the episodes and characters, both the regulars and recurring ones.

The timing of this video is perfect since it was only yesterday that I made the drive over to Mount Airy, NC from Pilot Mountain State Park and visited the Andy Griffith museum. Ron, Andy, Don, they were family to me. I was the one who changed over the years and my perspective changed but they always stayed the same. Ron was the perfect image of a son growing up in the 50's, Andy was the perfect image of a dad and a sheriff, and Don was the perfect foil to remind us that it was our imperfections and the struggles to overcome them that made us what we are. When the realities of life get a little too intense for me I turn to the show and think to myself "how would Andy handle this?" or I say to myself "don't handle this the way Barney would." The Andy Griffith show is a great example of what we humans can do when we collaborate. There was some awesome talent behind the show, but if any one of them had allowed their ego's to rise up and take control, the show would never have been as successful as it was and still is.

I still watch the Andy Griffith Show every weekday. I started watching when It first aired. Ron Howard and I are the same age so I feel like we grew up together, him playing Opie and me watching every episode.

The fact that those people were genuine and decent makes the show an enduring classic until this day.
