Bees like to wear pants in all different colours, shapes and sizes.
Anyone observing forager bees reentering the hive would be forgiven for thinking they’re watching an insect fashion runway! When foraging, bees collect pollen from a variety of flowers and store it behind their back legs in their pollen baskets (or pollen pants) for transporting back to the hive. Pollen can be a variety of colours from many shades of yellow, white, orange, pink, blue, grey, green and even purple. After extensive research, there hasn’t been any conclusive evidence that the colour of pollen attracts its foragers – rather, a bee’s foraging decisions are based on the colour and scent of the flower, particulary the sweet nectar.
