This is exactly why I find it disheartening that ExpressVPN threw it all away after the service was sold to Kape Technologies. A lot can be said about this company, but all you have to know is that they used to be a shady malware dealer / (slash) developer. Furthermore, Kape has been collecting VPN services for a few years now.

Comparing ExpressVPN vs Surfshark VPN, the latter had traversed a similar path but achieved a very different destination. It started out with a BVI-based jurisdiction, before moving on to operate under the jurisdiction of The Netherlands. This move came around the same time Surfshark merged with NordVPN. But unlike the Kape deal, Surfshark remained its own entity. Pairing up with NordVPN only served to improve the security and privacy elements of this VPN. It even passed an independent no-logs policy audit quite recently. Furthermore, Surfshark was the first VPN to follow ExpressVPN’s example and switch to RAM-only servers.

Starting with similarities, there are obvious ones: both VPNs use identical encryption algorithms and both include a kill switch. This is a feature that prevents leaks if your internet lags or disconnects a lot.

Another important element is Threat protection. Surfshark’s CleanWeb can get rid of ads, trackers, and malicious links. ExpressVPN’s Threat manager is essentially the same feature, and they both worked well for me.

But that’s where common points end, from now on it’s a Surfshark domination ark. Surfshark has developed a bunch of new features last year and more are on the horizon. First of all, there is a built-in suite of cybersecurity apps, including an antivirus, though it comes at a small price increase. Secondly, Surfshark is about to make disconnecting unnecessary even if you want to randomize your IP, connect to another server, or even build a custom multi-hop instance. However, it’s going to be a Windows-exclusive feature for some time after release.

These features are both good for your quality of life and your security. Frankly, I don’t see ExpressVPN outpacing Surfshark any time soon, considering it added 0 new features last year.
