Serie A from the 80s to early 2000s was without a shadow of a doubt, the best league in the world

Serie A was just incredible in the 80’s. 1984/85 season was even better imo with players like Boniek, Platini, Socrates, Prime Maradona, Zico, Rummenigge, Passarella etc..

The average football player of those times including the 90's and the initial years of the 2000's, were more skilled by far than the players nowadays.

It's not just about legendary players, but the game itself was at a pretty high level. It was beautiful to watch. It's insane that in Italy football was played quicker 30 years ago than in Italy now.

What a league, Maradona, Careca, Alemao, Gullit, Van Basten, Rijkaard, Matthaeus, Brehme, Klinsmann, Ramon Diaz, Voeller, Dunga, Laudrup, Luis Muller, combined with local superstar like Baresi, Maldini, Donadoni, Aldo Serena, Bergomi, Altobelli, Vialli, Mancini, Massaro, Baggio, Giannini and youngster like Marco Simone. That's insane

Certainly from 84 after Maradona had gone there until 99, and possibly for a couple of seasons after that, Serie A dominated world football! It was a Super League. In terms of European silverware + the best coaches. And for the crowds which were immense. And for the money + prestige. Del Piero was still the highest paid player in Europe at Euro 2000 + even by 2002, 5 out of the top 10 richest clubs in the world based on revenue were still Italian. And that's before you even take into account that almost half the league were usually bankrolled by(for the time) very rich oligarchs! They had 7/8 giant clubs challenging for the top places every season, and there was always 3 to 4 really good, mid-table sides with good International players like Genoa, Bologna, Vicenza, Udinese + Foggia that sometimes got into Europe + even the relegation contenders too, were usually packed with young stars, legends + a current International superstar. Like Zico, Balbo, M.S.Amoroso + Bierhoff at Udinese, Panucci, Branco, Eranio, Aguilera + Skuhravy at Genoa. Pirlo, Guardiola, Hagi + Baggio at Brescia, Dunga at Pescara, Bjorklund, Mendez + Otero at Vicenza, Platt, Boban, Jarni, K.Andersson, Masinga, Doll + Cassano at Bari, Chamot, Di Biagio, Petrescu, Signori + Kolyvanov at Foggia, Caniggia, Stromberg, Inzaghi, Vieri, Alemao, Montero + Ganz at Atalanta, Francescoli, Moriero, Dely Valdez, Herrera + Fonseca at Cagliari, Simeone at Pisa, Briegel, Stojkovic, Laursen, Berthold, Elkjaer + Mutu at Verona, Recoba at Venezia. The list is endless! Then you had the best players in the world at the top teams. The Germans from 1990 + beyond like Brehme, Voeller, Matthaus, Riedle, Kohler, Sammer, Heinrich, Effenberg, Ruminegge, Ziege, Moller, Klinsmann + Hassler. The Brazilians like Taffarel, Careca, Muller, Ronaldo, Falcao, Adriano, Cafu, R Carlos, Socrates, Emerson, Cruz + Edmundo. The Argentines like Diego, Batistuta, Veron, Ayala, Ortega, Crespo, Zanetti + Claudio Lopez. I remember literally half of Argentina's 98 World Cup Squad were based in Italy at the time. The Dutch like Van Basten, Davids, Rijkaard, Kluivert, Gullit, Bergkamp, Winter + Seedorf. The French from 96-00 like Desailly, Boghossian, Karembeu, Dugarry, Blanc, Djorkaeff, Thuram, Candela, Deschamps, Trezeguet, Zidane + Platini, Angloma + Papin from before. The Portuguese with Rui Costa, Couto, S.Conceicao, Futre + P.Sousa, the Swedes + Belgians like Brolin, Thern, Schwarz, Grun, Oliviera, Gerets + Scifo + the Africans like Weah, Oliseh, Song, West, Appiah, M'boma + A.Pele. Then they were the eastern Europeans like Savicevic, Jugovic, Nedved, Lacatus, Kubik, Simic, Boksic, Shalimov, Mikhailichenko, Dobrovolski, Stankovic, Kanchelskis, Stoichkov, Katanec, Mihajlovic + Vlaovic. And Miura, Nakata, Lalas, Gazza, Medford, Kaviedes + Ince all made their mark too. On top of all the great Italian legends of the time. All which made it the strongest league ever!

DAMN! A league full of legends, the Serie A 80s-90s was something extraordinary.. All the revolutionaries who made football as we know it today have gone through it, from coaches to players. Sacchi, Bearzot, Cappello, Bianchi... Careca, Maradona, Platini, Zico, Matthaus, Van Basten, Gullit, Baresi, Zidane, Baggio... you could keep making names for days. Winning Serie A in those years was the best for every football player.

Don't think people understand how naturally gifted so many young Italians are at football. All people ever talk about is southern American, Portuguese and Spanish talent but Italy has always had top tier footballing talent in their players.

It makes me cry the beauty of that time, those goals, actions, trainers, so many teams with legendary players and some really legendary teams (like those Napoli, Sampdoria, Inter, but above all Milan...)...pure legend
