September 11 was chosen by the terrorists because of its significance to Islamic history. It's also an interesting date in that it mimics the emergency number 911. Either of these could cause it to be subconsciously chosen as a date by someone building props for a movie. It is probably neither pure coincidence nor genuinely significant that it is the expiration date on Neo's passport.

It’s not exactly a coincidence if it happens over and over again in different movies predating the event. It doesn’t mean the attacks were planned years in advance per say… but perhaps in their plans leading up to the attacks they searched for and found all these “coincidences” and planned attacks on this day to create the exact riff we are discussing now… for some reason I surely do not know.

Its not that surprising. September 11 was declared "Universal brotherhood day" commemorating Swami Vivekananda's historic speech at the World Parliament of Religions in Chicago in 1893. The Wachowski's were familiar with eastern philosophy so maybe they picked that day for that reason, basically everyone has fogotten about this day and just what Swami Vivekananda espoused in his speech.
