Sirius Black was the only person to escape Azkaban unaided. Barty Crouch Jr, had help from his parents, and all the Death Eaters were more or less set free by Voldemort. It was even more impressive that he was never caught and returned to Azkaban Prison, although it certainly helped that he was an unregistered animagus.

Actually, it wasn't just willpower that kept him sane.
The books have him mention how he stayed intact in azkaban: he had a memory that wasn't happy, or sad, or angry. Just a memory, completely neutral emotion. He states that he held on to that single memory, making his time less miserable

Tbh the fact Sirius spent 12 years of his life in Azkaban and was still on the level of other witches and wizards his age and even better than most of them is a testament to how naturally talented he was. If he had the freedom to hone his abilities outside of Azkaban I believe he could've been Snape level powerful.

I think this is underrating him, I mean he was able to become an animagus as a what third or fourth year all without Dumbledore and the other teachers finding out.

In the 3rd book when everybody still thinks Sirius is a criminal, Harry overhears a conversation in Hogsmeade between McGonagall, Hagrid, and the Minister. The three of them confirm that Sirius (and James) were basically prodigies during their time at school. They talk about him un-aliving Pettigrew and all the collateral damage as though it would have been incredibly easy for him to accomplish such a feat. He might not be at Dumbledore/Voldemort levels but he is certainly at or above Professor/Auror level.

The marauders map saw through a cloak that not even death could see through. And they were only teens. The marauders are by far the most powerful wizards in the books.

J.K Rowling did said Sirius is the most powerful among The Marauders and is extremely good duelist. The problem is that 1. He doesn’t take the duels seriously, 2. Prefers to have his fun first, and 3. He was weakened and in bad mindset after 12 years in Azkaban.

If he never got lock up in Azkaban and actually take things seriously instead of playing around I believe he would have been one of the strongest wizards. Too bad Sirius is never serious. 😆

It wasn’t willpower that saved him in Azkaban in the books. He just wasn’t happy and had zero thoughts except that he didn’t betray his friends even though he was imprisoned for it. The dementors passed over him because they’re blind except for sensing feelings. The take happy memories. He had no happy memories. Just determination. Which allowed him to use wandless magic to transform. Even he didn’t know how he did it.

I think it was the fact that he was more focused on protecting Harry. That was his mistake. If he was paying more attention, he could have avoided the killing curse. It would have been nice to have seen more of the abilities of all the Order of the Phoenix members.
