Saving the past for future generations: Celebrating World Heritage Day 2024.

In every city, heritage buildings play an important part in the fabric of a community’s identity. At Buro Happold, our engineers have worked across a variety of heritage projects in the UK and the rest of the world, helping to give new life to these significant buildings.

Discussing World Heritage Day and our work on heritage projects, Ana Araújo, Partner, Buro Happold, said: “I am very proud to have grown up in the Porto region, which is UNESCO World Heritage for both the built and natural environment. This dual protection is quite relevant and should be thought about more widely in today’s world, when our environment needs just as much protection as our significant buildings.

“There is a massive sense of accomplishment when we contribute to the Conservation and, if possible, enhancement of the built and natural assets for future generations.

“But I have to say, there is an added layer of wonder in the work with heritage buildings and natural assets: uncovering the marks of time, how they can help us travel back in time, how they can provide us with false clues and trip us up in our investigation… but more importantly, the creativity that we need to bring to keep them relevant and in use, which is one of the most important aspects for the Conservation to be successful."
