Something a lot of people don’t realize is one first rate would have more cannons than a general would see on a whole campaign

This is way too high quality for a channel with less than 10000 subscribers

the thing that makes the victory so awesome isn't the ship itself, but the story it has carried.

Fascinating that this ship was built in Cuba and not anywhere in Europe.
In 1769, I would still have expected European shipyards to be far ahead of anything in the New World.

Why did the Spanish build it there? Maybe easier access to wood, compared to sparsely forested Iberia?

Were English ships at the time also built in English colonies?

Orient, sunk by Nelson during the battle of the Nile, was second I think.

The Royal navy learned early on that speed and manoeuvrability were just as if not more important than having more guns than the enemy

It is worth mentioning that she was not a very good ship when looking at silly little things like stability and speed.

4 decker or not, it didn't do her much good since she was captured at Trafalger.

That power did NOT help it at Trafalgar It was boarded by crew from the 64 gun HMS Africa who were told that the ship was still fighting and that they should leave. Which they politely did .. the Trinidad later struck her colours to HMS Prince a 98 gunned ship .
I think it was the Africa that was so slow that she arrived late and just went down the line firing on every enemy ship she passed

Britain had an empire, so focused on 74 gunships. Powerful enough to destroy any man of war, fast enough to catch any ship of the line, well also being resilient enough to fight in the line of battle.

As in most battles, the abilities of the leaders outweighed strength. I became player, coach of the losers, the second Rugby team. I bought and gave them eight balls and trained them the most happy way. A little structure and far more fun. No team had ever been more dominant, averaging 38 points. The outstanding Admiral on his old but quick flag ship found a new way to fight a line of heavy ships. He addled their brains confounded their expectations and destroyed their ships and crews, by fire great cannons through the entire length of their ships, through the weakest, the great cabin at the stern.

And got blown to fuck by ships half its size. More guns =\= better ship. The men sailing it make the difference.

some of those ships had more guns than most armies.

its more about the crew then the ship - at times the RN crews fired 3 shots to 1 spain/french shot. thats why they lost so often against the RN

The Santísima Trinidad was 4950 tonnes she was 112 guns as designed but she was put into the 140 gun class design after her modification. Also her sailing skills were so bad that they had to put a false keel on her. At her final battle she all her guns could not save her and she ended up being sunk cause of her size and all.

The Russian Blogodat was a copy of Santisima

Once the fourth deck was added the Santisima became a joke. So slow to answer it's helm its crew nick named the ship El Ponderoso - The Ponderous one and other ship preferred to keep away from it due to it's tendency to go off course. Powerful - hmmmm but not much of a warship
