This song was initially a horn solo by Bob Haggart and entitled "I'm Free" (1938) and performed by trumpet player Billy Butterfield. Then lyrics by Johnny Burke were added to it and it became "What's New?" (1939), first recorded by singer Teddy Grace and Bob Crosby and His Orchestra.

This song is like a trip to another time and place. Hauntingly beautiful, just like Ella's voice. It just sends me!

Let me be the first to say on this page:  She is quite sublime.  There's Sarah, there's Mildred, there's Carmen and Billie and Anita and a slew of others and they are all quite unique and I don't love one more than the other.  I could listen to Ella and be happy all day long.

Ella's is Surpurb. Love the way she does this song. Love her voice and transitions (vocalizations). Fantastic.
However, the transitions or vocalizations as great as they are. And as an intergral part of singing jazz. Takes away from the emotion of the song.
Still love her. And would pick her as a voice teacher any day.
Guess there are different types of singing. Ways a song is presented. Depending what your objective is.. I see this as a bit more dramatic and serious. But she is Ella Fiz is Grand.
