Today, Matthew Trumm of Treetop Permaculture joins me to discuss mega fires and real solutions. We’ll cover how poor forest management, like leaving debris behind, creates tinderboxes, and how turning it into biochar or using prescribed burns could help.

Matthew will share insights on using earthworks, small ponds, and hydrated landscapes to reduce fire risks, even in dry areas. Plus, we’ll explore land restoration after fires and why practical solutions matter more than political blame. Don’t miss this one!

Ill chime in from Ca. We live on acreage in the hills, we use spring water that comes from a place about 120' above our house, store it in large tanks, about 30k gals in total. We also have a well whick we dont use in the house, its safe to drink but has a funk and sulpher smell. We test both sources yearly. Point is, we also use a Berkey. We use it to fill water bottles we keep in the fridge and for our fancy coffee maker, so no possible silt or minerals gum it up. If I were to move to the city again, Id take the Bekey with me and use it because of the "sanitary" crap they put in munincipal water. Sure you could buy a different brand, but you still have to buy the filters, which is where the true cost is. Ive had mine 5 years, no problems.

A 10 dollar permit is all thats needed to go into a designated national or state forest in Ca. Its at least a 2 hour drive from my home to do this. However, we have about 3 years of firewodd laying on the property, without anymore cutting. In northeast Ca, they have mills for energy generation burning biomass. In other words theyre cutting the local forest to burn.

🌟This is the first recent analysis of fire behavior that I've said "fuck yeah" out loud... & several times❣️

Yes, yes, yes‼️ Grazers, beavers, salmon bears for forests & grasslands❣️
🦫🦬🦌🐟🐻
The newly formed Lassen wolf pack survived the Lassen fire by running to beaver habitat.

The building materials are horrible, & building codes stop affordable natural & fire resistant building practices.

Here in CO, the idiots are using wildfire prevention money to take out the fire resistant healthy old growth & clear cutting. The Marshall Fire was a recent grassland fire on the Front Range. Well, in areas where grazers & burrowers had been removed from the land. 🤔 Invasives like cheatgrass burn readily.

The latest SoCal fires were in grass & chapparal biomes.

I kind of think "Insurance" companies or services are being used as a type of "pass" to be careless, or neglectful. People don't bother to put in safeguards; follow safe or healthy practices. I have heard on more than one occasion "doesn't matter I/they got insurance". You just have to be more careful, alert, and observant if you don't have insurance.
