Computer science Professor Paul Barford and a team of researchers recently published the first publicly available map of the US's long-haul fiber-optic cable network. It took the team nearly 4 years to put together by sifting through public records and data from internet and cable providers.

This right here is the reason I like living on the East Coast. Notice how out west with the exception of like California the fiber network is so sparsely distributed. Basically means it's impossible to get good, affordable, internet.

When it says there is a long haul fiber optic cable, I wonder how many that is? And how much can they get through each, I assume single-mode with repeaters, like undersea. If everyone wants Gbit connections, or more, since obviously a duplex connection is capable of 2, 4, 8, 10, 40 GBs, I dont know, but FC, infiniband, 10Gb ethernet, etc, or 5G wireless, which they say is capable of something like, what was it, 50Gbs or 70? It would need to be a continous mesh all connected to satellite, undersea cable, microwave cell towers, simultaneously.

why no long haul cable in S Dakota? Is there a law against running it? Some issue with digging?

the United States is a country too far behind Europe, the level of development is too low and average Americans are too stupid to understand that, money is thrown out the window everywhere. When we look at the deployment of fiber, it's a disaster compared to Europe, in the USA only 28.5% of Americans are connected in 24mbt/s at 1gb/s it's ridiculous while in Estonia it's is 98% in 24mbt/s and in Germany 98% in france, italy, spain the same .... too old the continent of uncle sam.
