TITLE: Using a narrative and play-based activity to promote disadvantaged preschoolers’oral language, emergent literacy, and social competence
SPEAKER: Prof. Ageliki Nicolopoulou
ABSTRACT: There is increasing interest in using interventions that integrate narrative, play, and peer cooperation elements to promote learning and development in early childhood. I will review findings from one of my long-term projects examining whether a peer-oriented but teacher-guided practice of child-initiated storytelling and group story-acting, integrated as a regular component of the preschool curriculum, can help promote three critical dimensions of young children’s school readiness: narrative and other oral-language skills, emergent literacy, and social competence. This storytelling and story-acting practice is a structured activity that provides opportunities for children’s narrative development, among other things and exemplifies child-centered, playful, and constructivist approaches in early childhood education. It can operate as a curriculum module in conjunction with various preschool curricula. Based on my studies and others, I will provide evidence that this activity can promote children’s narrative development and school readiness in young children, including children from low-income and diverse backgrounds. I will also explore one key mechanism for helping promote these abilities by focusing on the peer group culture, which helps create a shared narrative culture that becomes the impetus for further development.

H Αγγελική Νικολοπούλου είναι καθηγήτρια και διευθύντρια του Narrative Development Laboratory του Τμήματος Ψυχολογίας στο Lehigh University (ΗΠΑ). Έλαβε το διδακτορικό της δίπλωμα στην Ψυχολογία από το University of California στο Berkeley. Έκτοτε, έχει αναλάβει ερευνητικά καθήκοντα στο City University of New York και στο University of California στο San Diego και έχει διδάξει στο UC San Diego, στο Smith College και (από το 1996) στο Lehigh University. Στο επίκεντρο του ερευνητικού της έργου βρίσκεται η ανάπτυξη της παραγωγής και της κατανόησης αφηγημάτων, οι αναπτυξιακοί ρόλοι του αφηγήματος και του παιχνιδιού, η κοινωνική νόηση, η διαμόρφωση ταυτότητας, η ομάδα συνομηλίκων ως μήτρα μάθησης και ανάπτυξης, η αλληλεπίδραση του γραμματισμού και του προφορικού λόγου και η ανάλυση παιδικών βιβλίων.
