That penny survived 56 years, passed through countless hands, but had the misfortune of getting into the hands of @NileRed

This reaction embodies the best parts of chemistry: fun colors, destruction, and deadly products.

I used to work at a company where I would Neutralize a 500 gallon tank of Nitric and Citric Acid. Along with that I was the only person on site other then my boss that would handle all chemical spills. One day a production worker spilled a gallon jug of Nitric Acid in the Corrosive Safety Cabinet and Me and my boss were the ones who had to safely dispose of it. So we headed over to the cabinet with our Plastic Drum and Sorbent pads. We cleaned the whole Cabinet out and also had to throw the cabinet away after as the Acid had already began to eat through it. When we finished there was a bunch of rust that was left on the floor after removing the cabinet. So my boss scoops up all the rust and then throws it into the same container that was full of sorbent pads that were drenched in acid. We took the Plastic drum and put it into the 90 day storage room where all chemicals and chemical waste are stored. A few hours later I walked back into the Awn Room (Acid Waste Neutralization). When i noticed the 90 day storage room had an orangish tint coming from underneath the door, the smell was unbearable. So i open the door to the 90 day storage room to find the whole room covered in an orange fog, it looked like a nuke had bombed the room, the drum was full of pressure and was about to explode. So i run and call my boss and this man had the balls to put on a gas mask and pull the drum out to place it underneath an exhaust fan where he opened it with a stick. He then began to add water to neutralize it. I have never seen anything like that orange fog, it was straight out of a movie and could have ended very badly. Moral of the story, Be aware of chemical reactions and NEVER mix rust with Acid 😂😂

I always love it when you can tell that a gas is very angry and you don't want to be near it from its strong color.

This experiment always makes me think of something I read in my college chemistry textbook. It was an excerpt from an older book by a moderately famous chemist, but I don't recall exactly who. The main point of the exerpt, though, was that chemistry texts should be specific when describing the effects and hazards of different chemicals and reactions. The author had apparently once read that "nitric acid acts on copper" with no further explanation. Out of curiosity, he decided to test it to see what that meant. So he procured some nitric acid, set a penny on the table, and poured the acid over it. He freaked out when it started to fizz and produce brown gas, so he tried to pick up the penny. That's when he learned that nitric acid acts on fingers as well. So he tried to wipe the acid off his burning fingers on his pants, which is when he learned that nitric acid acts on trousers as well. After that, he never tried another reaction without safety equipment and doing research into the chemicals involved.

I remember doing this in chemistry class! If i remember correctly, you can scratch the surface of the penny and the acid will eat all the zinc inside first, then if you stop the reaction you can be left with a cool hollow penny!
