I learned to automate first in my late twenties on a Mitsubishi Westar console in the late 1980's, then I was on large-format consoles running the Bernoulli disk SSL automation system for a long time, with a fair bit of Neve Flying Faders when I was in Neve rooms Then it was ITB ProTools and various other DAWs. I'm used to learning nothing much from these types of videos, but Joe and Gregor both deliver excellent overviews from their slightly different viewpoints. I'm closer to Joe's background, coming from the guitar band and rock engineering background, but I've done tons of EDM and synth work, being British LOL, so I can relate to them both. I really enjoyed this video and, being a lifelong student, was thrilled to be reminded again about how useful Touch automation can be in certain situations, though I am so used to just drawing it all in as i manipulate the zoom scales to see the damn chorus that I'm interested in balancing in the context of the mix. I must say too that I could not be happier with Studio One (especially with the online content from Joe and Gregor) and I am thrilled to be free of the tyranny of the ubiquitous but so outdated, shareholder-driven and consistently unreliable ProTools. Post-pandemic, work is thin, but I continue on as both producer and artist, and Studio One covers both those needs perfectly. THANK YOU.

Awesome stuff joe. Thats helpful to know that just increasing the gain is going to affect the plugins on the channel. I have been doing this but im going to switch back to actual automation. You and gregor are awesome at efficiencies and making understandable content. Thanks man😎

Thanks Joe! Being a newbie to S1 and a new Sphere member, these tutorials really help with the learning curve...

Thanks to Gregor for the Option/Alt A and point-click way for selecting automation. Well, if it's just volume automation the advantage is small, but try Option/Alt A inside a plugin. Then you can automate whatever control is there. Much easier than stepping through a sometimes long list control names for that plugin.

Thank you so much! I needed to know how to make my volume automation smoother and your video showed me exactly what I needed to know.

Kinda surprised you didn't mention simply adding a mixtool. Sometimes it's just faster and easier.

Hey Joe, another great video that is bringing me over to Studio One and abandoning Logic and Reaper. One question/concern. I see that your VCA fader actually moves the channel faders. My limited understanding is that the VCA on an analog console wouldn’t have moved the channel faders (I think). In both Reaper and Logic, when moving the VCA faders, the channel faders stay put, but the volume on them definitely increases/decreases. Any idea why the difference and is there a different outcome when the faders move? I would think it wouldn’t be desirable since you may end up getting your faders into that area where you start to be less precise on your volume? Thanks!

Great video Joe. Thanks for a better understanding of automation. And a big shoutout to Presonus for making a fantastic D.A.W.

ONLY IN 'REAPER' THE VOLUME AUTOMATION IS PRE-FADER SO YOU CAN AUTOMATE THE VOLUME AND STILL CAN CHANGE THE OVERALL VOLUME OF THE TRACK WITH TRACK FADER. PLEASE ADD THIS FEATURE TO STUDIO ONE. THIS IS THE ONLY THING THAT BOTHERS ME IN STUDIO ONE.

The range tool method, that's what I was trying to do earlier today thanks for this!🛸🤖

Feature request: Just make a Pro Tools / Logic Pro style volume trim automation feature. That way the fader is not locked in, and the automation is working relative to the fader position so you don't have to mess with automating the gain in MixTool every time.

Thanks, Joe. This is great. I have a stupid question, though. What’s the difference between volume and expression?

One thing I miss from Reaper when I use Studio One is Reaper's Trim/Read automation mode. This lets you automate the volume fader without the automation taking over the fader. That is, you can still use the fader to trim the volume with its automation.

Most times I find myself using the gain envelope, because it works a lot faster. And my fader won't be affected.
