The Panama Canal was completed in 1914. Today the Panama Canal is a 51-mile-long (82-kilometer-long) waterway that is one of the greatest and most complex engineering projects ever completed. It links the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, letting ships bypass the natural waterways between North and South America and circumnavigate Cape Horn, cutting the voyage between the two continents by 9,000 miles (15,000 km).
