Before you turn on that light stick, keep your finger on the glass part, and then turn it on, you may even turn it all the way up, it won't shock you this way, and with your finger on it, put it on your face or a part of your skin you would like to treat, then remove the finger... like this you will never get shocked...

Idk what I did wrong with my high frequency wand but it caused a spasm in my face for 2 it was horrible and I had to go to doctor to make sure everything was okay.
