There is a popular meme going around at the moment which shows Napoleon looking off hopelessly into the ocean, with the supposed quote from Napoleon “There is nothing we can do.” This hopeless Tik Tok characterisation of Napoleon is arguably simply a continuation of the romanticisation of Napoleon's exile, something that's been going on for more than two centuries. In reality though, Napoleon's days in exile were much more boring, mainly consisting of writing his memoirs, playing cards and complaining about his living conditions. And while it is indeed possible that he said this line, there is sadly no record of him ever uttering these words.
