The IIHS is priceless. These types of tests are the only things forcing automakers to seriously up safety measures.

Since the introduction of the small overlap test in 2012, Toyota has scored poor or marginal every time the IIHS updates their testing procedure. It shows that Toyota built those cars to minimally meet IIHS standards rather than going above and beyond them like other brands have shown to do.

In crash tests with Toyota Camry to research and create new MDB barriers, it always has a "good" rated structure. In this test, the structure was downgraded to acceptable (not bad). However, because the sensors in the dummy register a lot of high force in the dummy, it has an overall rating of "poor".

This is actually the 8th side test done on the Camry since 2018 (including tests done with F-150s, Pilot and modified MDB barriers.

Fun Fact: The Toyota Camry, KIng Camry, is still a 2022 "Top Safety Pick+" even with this failure, since it did ace a previous side test. I would think the latest test would trump an old test, but apparently

The problem with mid and full sized cars is that there is such a target for t-boning and the larger size means that it is harder and more expensive to make strong and light a, b, and c pillars that can with strain that much force of a larger vehicle.

This is the price of Toyota using ancient designs for years and years. I believe they have more "Poor" ratings than any other manufacturer with their trucks just getting obliterated in SORB.

UPDATE: TOYOTA Camrys built after January 2023 have an updated side structure and now receive a GOOD in the updated side impact test!

I think the IIHS should give some context in the descriptions, afaik this is the updated test rig, right, not an update on the part of Toyota?

These test are a step in the right direction, but still terribly flawed in respect to reality. I see crashes here all the time with say a F150 vs a car in a T-bone. The truck usually has no actual damage and is driven onto the back of the tow truck. The person in the car dies and the truck literally goes 2-3 feet into the car hitting much higher on the door.

IIHS needs to raise the sled at least 10-12 more inches to be realistic... In the end, sedans will probably be killed off by all the distributors in the USA due to liability fears of how deadly they are, as comparted to trucks/SUVs. "selling a deadly product".... "if you or a loved one was killed in a sedan that was hit by a bigger truck or SUV, you can now sue the manufacture and win huge money- call now"...

You can see clearly the knees get hit and destroy the pelvis and spine, especially for the rear passengers. The structure is not bad, but the 'design' of the door panels is hazardous.

I can't even imagine if this new side test was like introduced in 2012 alongside with the small driver-side overlap test and they tested the 2012 model knowing that particular model year of the Camry got a "Poor" rating.
