I relate so much to Whiteout as someone who is nuerodivergent. I hope this video did her justice. Also, there WILL be a video on Listener, and very soon. I hate her.

“I’m sorry for winning”

I like Whiteout a lot. She's delightfully strange, but not nuts. You've made some great points about her. You're right that her life was far greater and more rewarding that Darkstalker's ever could be.

A point i would like to add onto this analysis is that in Darkstalker's visions there are ones where Whiteout helps him in his conquest for power, fights him for power, etc (its been a while since I've read it so im paraphrasing). So it shows that she definetly could've become just as power-hungry as him but chose not to which is something i think takes a lot of strength to do.

Because let's be honest, it's really easy to go down the wrong path if you have too much power. We saw it happen with Darkstalker and multiple people in the real world. So thats just another point to add to her emotional maturity as not many people can say no to something like that.

To give some extra analysis it’s straight up mentioned in the book that whiteout is very perceptive during the glass festival where makes a connection with thoughtfuls work that nobody else noticed. She also seems to be keenly aware of most of darkstalkers and clearsights shenanigans. You mentioned this in the video but the “I like the way she knits” is a clear reference to the time line which is often described as a tangle of futures that clearsight sorts through. Also the line “he’s not going to snow for a while” feels like she’s referencing the piling white sand in the soul reader and I know for a fact that she knows about that because as soon as she’s freed from her fathers spell she says “oh no we’re too late the sand has already fallen”. Sooo yeah she knows darkstalker won’t be redeemed the second she’s freed from the spell. Over all whiteout is just a fun character to analyze and I have noticed this every single time I re-read legends and it’s great to know I’m not crazy and other people have noticed.

I knew Whiteout had synesthesia! It was actually a thought I had after reading 'A Mango-Shaped Space'. Thanks for the confirmation! Whiteout is definitely the BEST!

Honestly, I think Whiteout had all three powers. The prophecy one is obvious, but she also seems to know things in the present that she really shouldn't. The animus power is harder to see evidence for, but I think it's the reason her egg didn't turn silver and she has powers without hatching under the full moon.

I didn't think of synesthesia (obvious now in hindsight), I just assumed whatever spell she used on her egg was also a spell to hide her thoughts from Darkstalker and, being cast by someone so young and inexperienced, it had unexpected consequences. I suppose that could still be it.

She seems to have valued peace and freedom more than anything and so picking a future where Darkstalker would never figure out her powers seems very in keeping with her goals.

This was a very eye-opening video! I didn’t view Whiteout this way, but now that you pointed it out, it makes so much sense.

Also, your Whiteout art piece was absolute eye candy!!!

Yessss, I've been waiting for a Whiteout analysis video :] can't wait to watch this!
Edit: omg thank you for mentioning Listener's ableism. The Clearlistener ship always made me uncomfortable because Listener is just kinda a bad person in general. I do somewhat disagree that Foeslayer is an enabler because I think there's more nuance than that, but I 100% agree with the rest of this video. I hope people will eventually quit infantilizing Whiteout :, ) she's such an interesting character and doesn't deserve to get boiled down to "adorable cinnamon roll"

Thank you so much for talking about the infantilization of characters in Wings of Fire!!! Another example is Kinkajou, she's always dismissed as the silly, immature, comic relief, when she is SO much more than that!!! She's badass and has a clever side, fans only see the silly little dragonet, not the traumatised sweetheart with a clever side and the passion to get things done!!!!

This video really captures what I love about her character. There's an animation of her, using the song Dollhouse to capture the trauma she suffered during her childhood.

0:20 a manor I love, she may be one of my top favorites, honestly

Whiteout and Clearsight were my top favorite characters in Darkstalker Legends. I related to both of them, Whiteout for her oddness, Clearsight for her paranoia about the future

Edit: God, the comparssion of the fandom’s treatment of Whiteout vs She-Ra fandom’s treatment of Entrapta made me remember when I still watched She-Ra with my friend. And all the scenes with Hordak and Entrapta made me turn to her and ask “is it bad that I lowkey ship them?” She said “nah, I ship them too, though the whole fandom is having a huge discourse over it”

I’m sad that Whiteout, Sunny, and Sky aren’t treated well due to being seen as cute and innocent. They just chose to be who they are! Am I the only one who wishes Tui would write a WoF book from Whiteout’s POV?

I love this! I have noticed these signs for AGES, and I love that you made this! I think when she says that one of them will see Foeslayer, depending on who loses their future, she could see multiple futures. She almost got taken to the Ice Palace, which would have stolen her future with Thoughtful, but Foeslayer would have been there with her and Arctic. Instead, Darkstalker lost his future with Clearsight, but saw his mother again. Thank you so much for making this! :)

whiteout is my favorite character. The way she is relates to me in every shape way and form.
Whiteout's story of family trauma, a broken scene, and the way she is treated. As a neurodivergent queer person (i am autistic, and i will correct you here respectfully sensory issues are one of the defining characteristics of autism, not just social cues.)people see me in such a way, the way they saw her. And when people showed me a "lighter" way of talking to me, they did what young darkstalker did. Do what they think was best for me. Believing that they needed to do something to make me better, to "help" me. My parents saw me for what i was born to be, what they wanted me to be, the way arctic wanted to change her. Thats what they wanted, me to believe things i did not, me to act a way i did not, be what i did not. I wanted peace. Whiteout, being misunderstood, babied, and treated differently than how she should have been treated relates exactly to how i feel. the mind i have inside is not what people think it is. she is a wonderfully written character and an amazing representation of neurodivergence and a victim of family trauma.

I also hc her as autistic too

Whiteout is honestly the character I see myself most in, I feel like a lot of my life. I've been overlooked as someone strange and innocent despite being a rather disturbed individual sometimes. The mental issues I've had almost don't exist to people around me because my lack of social understanding will always make me a child in their eyes no matter how I am act. I'm someone who most likely has autism or some form of neurodivergency and have usually had different thinking strategies too, I compare people to different event's, people, and animals in my head based off of behavior. I absolutely love how Tui portrayed whitout, but it upsets me to see the failure of understanding by those in the fandom.

Whiteout is a peak character, and i will entertain no arguments to the contrary

Just to clarify Whiteout has synesthesia and that's why she sees the world differently. Although Tui has shown things like this in dragons, Whiteout is the only one who has this condition. And with synesthesia you might think of things as colors instead of numbers and letters. for example: 1=Blue 2=Red 3=Purple. Thus Blue + Red = Purple. This fact I have backed up by the fact Darkstalker decribed her mind as she thinks in colors instead of words. Hope this helped!❤

Hello, I really liked your analysis of Whiteout. Unfortunately, I haven’t read Darkstalker (Legends) in quite some time, so my memory of it is a bit fuzzy. Before I watched your video, I didn’t really have much of an opinion of Whiteout. I remember finding her interesting due to her Hybrid heritage and how most dragons around her infantilized her, thinking she was weird or didn’t know better. Your analysis on Whiteout opened me to a deeper more nuanced understanding of her! Now I love her even more!
Note: During the Darkstalker (Legends) book, I think a really interesting piece of text was about Whiteout’s paintings with NightWings and IceWings in shades of blue, IN PEACE. Her outlet to express things in a more visual manner (painting), maybe this could imply she didn’t necessarily express herself verbally. I’m pointing this out because I think this detail suggests Whiteout could’ve been distraught with what was happening between the two tribes.

As a curious INFJ, WoF fan, writer and artist, your video is a delicious artistic combo and I just learned two new ways of painting when hearing your Whiteout analysis xD. Awesome!
