Does a YEV Need a Preamp?

I've tried it with and without. In my setup, both sound okay, but preamp sounds better.

And EQ and noise gate and a power supply and a looper and couple of delay pedals and a phase shift maybe some fuzz and distortion with a two for one talk and wah all going through a bass amp
