Start composting! #homesteading

Composting is a great way to reduce your waste. It doesn’t have to be complicated. Make sure you’re adding wet (green) and dry (materials) and the compost will break down over time.

A smelly compost typically means that it’s unbalanced. The typical ratio of brown to green material is 30:1.

Food scraps and grass clippings are examples of green materials.

Leaves and pine shavings are an example of brown materials.

ABOUT US: We are Alex and Elaina, a couple in our 20s who are currently living on the 3-acre farm in southern Pennsylvania where Alex grew up. We have a garden, backyard chickens, and build or fix anything that we need to. We still work corporate day jobs, but are working to eventually leave the 9-5 lifestyle in favor of a self-built, debt-free, homestead on 6 acres nearby.

Let me just say that you bring hope to my day. As a grandmother I have taken on the task to try and lead the nation and the world to a more life friendly pursuit. It’s been difficult because of the way of thinking that got us in this scenario which I have to own as my own. I hadn’t done a true evaluation of my society and thus hadn’t looked at my own thinking and my own pursuits as evidence as to the why something happened. I was very easily able to give the excuses and justifications however throughout the early process before I put it all together as a whole. I recognized my own incompetence right out of the house, and it took me years to work on those issues instead of just getting back to what a human life is. I never found a mate that wanted to get back to human life and I want you to know how blessed you and your family are to have found someone like that.

My compost heap attracted rats to my suburban backyard, so now I let the city do it. The green bin is picked up weekly so rodents don't have time to move in.

If you blend the food scraps they decompose faster
