EDIT: Yes guys, I’ve heard of palm muting…this is just a cheap solution to a rubber bridge tone (which doesn’t really sound like palm muting tbh). If you can play nuanced finger/hybrid picking patterns while palm muting, thats awesome. If you can't, maybe this hack would be fun.

In 9 years of stringing tennis racquets this never dawned on me. I’m really mad.

Im not a guitarist but I love seeing people find little very legitimate "approximation" hacks for people who want to try something in their hobby without massive investment.

This looks super cool. Good find and great share for your community, kudos

On violins, we have what are called mutes. They go over the bridge that holds the strings up. It just clamps on, so im wondering who no one thought of that already 😅

25 years of playing guitar and I've never heard of a rubber bridge until now

Those are fantastic for tennis players too because many people argue they can decrease the vibration of the racquet, thus decreasing join pain and imo making your hits just feel better. Crazy that one thing can be so useful for entirely different hobbies/careers!

Bassist have been doing this for decades. Foam floor mats work great too, just cut them up to whatever size you need.

Use a dollar bill like Johnny Cash. It gives it a muted and percussive sound. 🤙🏽

All the people so pleased with themselves for palm muting are so good that they can use their fretting hand to also play their skin flute for accompaniment.

that guitar tone sounds like the aggressively nice guy waiting for you to kiss him

Visually this looks similar to what classical musicians with the violin, viola cello, or bass have. Something called a “mute“. But this seems to have a slightly different purpose than the mute only giving it a different sound. A mute in classical orchestras is also meant to make the instrument a bit quieter, and I’m not entirely certain if it’s supposed to be for the purpose of changing the sound or if that’s just an added side effect in classical music.

I tried this on my guitar on a tennis court, but still found a racquet to be better for the game.

Damn dude you figured that out nice and professional.

I got one after your recommendation and I like it a lot! Thanks. I actually use it on my electric, I guess in theory I could palm mute and get a similar effect but I prefer the babolat

I think this is really interesting because for violin we have, , , literally that but it's for our instrument. Our mutes are typically rubber and they just pop on and off. Neat that y'all found essentially the same thing for guitars!

I got one and it is awesome to record with. Easier than swapping out a pedal even.

Bassists have been putting foam under the bridge since the 1950s, it works great
