a real pity Sammer had to retire so early with injuries and miss the '98 World Cup.
was still close to his peak having won both the Euro '96 player of the tornament and later that year the Ballon dor.
then in 1997 he leads Dortmund to the Champions League title...fantastic player.

Matthias Sammer was of course the workds greatest Libero at the time. And still to this date the only player that was almost at the level of Lothar Matthäus...but there is a unsung hero in this German team....

Dieter Eilts....what for a incredible tournament this man played. He was literally the interceptor....man narking the opponents playmaker or central attacking midfielder PLUS intercepting counters....tackling everytynesr him.... but also able to pass the ball. Phenomenal performance....

Да. Немцы, конечно, часто что-то выигрывают на мировых и европейских первенствах. В последние годы, разве что, не очень выступают. А мне на том турнире очень понравилась сборная Чехии. И болел за неё в финале. Жаль, что уступили немцам! Хотя Бирхофф классный был игрок. И забивал в финале отлично. Но я рад, что потом правило Золотого гола отменили. А так чехи могли и отыграться в том финале. Но у немцев тоже была классная команда и сильное поколение. Сейчас уже и близко не то. Да и у чехов то же.
