The hard drive in the first iPod was made by Toshiba.

I recall Kate & Leo as the Screen Savers on ZDTV back in 1999/2000 and Google was a just a baby at the time. Oh my, time does fly...

I'm shocked. Simply amazing he's still alive? I loved this guy and show years ago, and happy he with his show is still active.

The original iPod has 5gb in 2001. The previous year the Archos Jukebox 6000 had 6gb. I love it how people go around pretending like Apple and Jobs invent stuff, they don't. They steal normal ideas and wrap a nice interface around it - which is cool. But the iPod wasn't special for its storage capacity, especially in regard of value for money per gb.

Leo is right in that the iPod was Apple’s first Consumer Electronic that was meant for the masses.

I remember the first portable music player... the Sony Walkman! And in many ways it was better than an iPod.

I believe it was Toshiba who manufactured the 1.8 inch drive. And according to Isaacson’s biography of Steve Jobs, it was not on the verge of being discontinued. Toshiba gave Apple’s John Rubenstein, a sneak peek at the drive on one of his routine trips to Japan. They had just begun manufacturing the drive but they had no idea what it could be used in. I believe Apple wrote Toshiba a $10 million check for exclusive rights to all the drives that Toshiba could manufacture.

Whoa. The voice jumped out at me from the radio. It’s always a slightly curious experience to see someone from the radio for the first time.

I still have two, both 64 gigs, both still working, and loaded up with MP-3s.

I have one and they are actually 5GB! Pre-click-wheel such a great physical feel the center actually rotates to scroll!

Sorry, that was explained too simply

The first iPod, released in 2001, used a combination of a built-in hard drive and cache to optimise music playback. Here are some details:

Hard disk: The first iPod was equipped with a 5 GB hard disk, which came from Toshiba. This hard drive could store about 1000 songs, which was revolutionary for the time.

Cache: To improve performance and extend battery life, the iPod used a 32 MB cache. This cache saved the next songs that should be played in advance. As a result, the hard drive did not have to rotate constantly, which reduced energy consumption and extended the life of the hard drive.

How it works: When a song is played, the iPod loaded the next songs into the cache. While these songs were playing from the cache, the hard drive could be put to sleep. This minimised access to the hard disk and ensured a smooth playback without interruptions.
