∙(trad. by G....E)

Pejačević is considered a major Croatian composer. She left behind a considerable catalogue of 58 opuses (106 compositions), mostly in late Romantic style, including songs, piano works, chamber music, and several compositions for large orchestra, arguably her best. Her Symphony in F-sharp minor is considered by scholars the first modern symphony in Croatian music. Most of her music has yet to be published and released on compact disc, although concerted efforts have been made recently to rectify this situation.(Wikipedia).

A tremendous symphony. I find discussions about influences and the composer's musical language beside the point. All composers build on what came before and whatever the musical language (and Pejačević's is no more conservative than that of Elgar or Rachmaninov whose symphonies date from the same period - in some respects less so), what is important is whether that language and those influences are mastered and assimilated into a distintive musical voice. This strikes me as patently and triumphantly the case here. I would add that Pejačević wrote this symphony when she was 32 years old and that she died aged just 37.

Hard to believe this great work was only recorded previously once. Thanks hr-Sinfonieorchester, for making my day. Dora finally done justice by a great orchestra!

I watched this when it was livestreamed in early march while on vacation, and I stayed up late watching the whole thing. This is one of the most amazing performances I have ever seen, and I personally LOVE the 4th movement the best!

I am listening to this for the first time and it is certainly very pleasant on the ear, but I'm finding it difficult to discern the structure of the work. It breaks no new ground harmonically and it repeatedly seems to promise development but just when it seems to be heading towards developing its themes, pulls back and more or less repeats itself. So I will continue to enjoying it for what it is along with a sense of frustration for what it might have been. Or for not seeing what is actully there after all. The audience certainly enjoyed it, so perhaps it's me after all -- it's just that I look for at least more adventurous harmony in what I gather is a 20th century work.
