Sokushinbutsu -Quest for the Living Mummy

Sokushinbutsu (即身仏) were Buddhist monks who caused their own deaths in a way that resulted in their mummification. The aim was that during their life they would develop a rainbow body and the ability to live forever in that spiritual body. Once they had reached this level of enlightenment they would start on a days on a diet of only nuts and seeds, bark and roots. After twothousand says they would stave to death an their bodys would never rot leaving them to remain on earth in their rainbow body and to help others.
This practice only ever took place northern Japan around Yamagata Prefecture.
