3D SCAN VFX - Adobe After Effects Tutorial

Want to create a cool 3D SCAN EFFECT for your short film? In this After Effects tutorial I will show you how!

In this tutorial we will use the 3D Camera Tracker to track a POV shot and then create 3D planes for the ground and the trees. We will then replace the planes with an animated grid to 'scan' across the environment. We will finish the effect off with some colour grading and glow.

A thought that came to mind reading your text version of this tutorial.

When setting up planes for 3D spaces like this effect or camera projection, I suggest moving the anchor point of the first plane to the bottom center edge. That way when creating later planes (so, trees, walls, other things perpendicular to the ground plane), you DUPLICATE the floor plane. Moving the anchor point to the bottom edge means a simple rotation of the new tree plane gives the perpendicular orientation while leaving the bottom of the tree plane flush with the existing ground. Makes it easy to create new layers while having the whole 3D rig aligned. This is particularly helpful in creating setups for virtual rooms and corridors--especially in projection where the size of the plane has little effect on how the effect renders.

Very nicely put together. Ironically, probably even easier to set up on a full moving shot, rather than a PTZ. Maybe with a Mocha Solve? Projection overlays atop the existing planes might be fun with the right overlays, but I'm probably overthinking it.

Grid and Bulge are two underrated effects, and can be used in all kinds of creative ways. This was a good one.
