Dam number 5 is located on the Maryland side of the Potomac River near Clear Spring and Williamsport. Dam 5 was built in 1832 to 1834 at a cost of 47,088.67 and was originally made from wood cribbing and stones. In the 1860's TJ Jackson partially destroyed dam number 5 and it was later rebuilt into the stone low head that it is today. The C&O Canal at number 5 had a guard lock which helped control flood waters. Across the river on the West Virginia side is the location of the old Honey Wood Mill which was built as a flour mill in the 1830's. In the 1880's the mill was converted to a pulp wood mill and then a water powered electric plant in 1904. The dam and the mill still produce electricity today and the hum of the turbines can be heard over the sound of the crashing water.

Very nice video about the Potomac River. Bruce and I did the entire C&O Canal a few years back, which included the Potomac River.
