New satellite imagery shows China is testing two extra-large unmanned underwater vehicles, or XLUUV. They are also being developed in Western countries, and are widely seen as a key part of future naval warfare.

One way to setup underwater communication is doing it exactly like how we do it with 4g/5g network on the ground, have remote stations in each area. Those little subs might be the serve as remote station. Remember how China's gov provide phone signals for ppl in flooded areas last year? They used Wing long II.

I think the Chinese while building their drone subs, got a huge boost from their coastal fishermen fishing out US drones from their waters while trawling. Imagine those tech incorporated into their existing sub drones

Just like drones and UAVs changed aviation warfare, these will significantly change naval warfare in the future.

I believe that China will likely mass-produce a lot of this and have them run on some kind of "proximity" network. setting up a system where a lot of drones can "link" up with each other will ensure information relay without the use of super-advanced technologies. What they could even do is build a special version of the drone without armament but extra communication device, and have that drone act as a transitor of the entire local network. Should missions be excuted in locations away from China, they could always use a far-range UAV as singal broadcaster.

Interesting. You'd still need a lot of autonomy for the drones as using those kind of low bandwidth channels would mainly be used for changing general mission parameters. But it could be used to "wake-up" a bunch of dormant drones that would be pre-deployed in the way of an incoming fleet or at strategic points, waiting, relying only on passive sensors for total stealth .. then when the order comes with the latest coordinates of their target they would engage in an autonomous hunt and kill mission.
Not sure what the autonomy of a drone could be though, batteries would still have to drain to keep the electronic awake, but in a power saving mode I would guess those could last quite some time underwater.

A crucial development as XLUUVs can be used as decoys for crewed submarines as well as active sonar sensor platforms, revealing nearby hostile submarines without risking the lives of crews by giving away their positions.

In general, 'Terminator movie reminiscent warfare' is what may become prevalent as one can observe currently in drone swarm deployments in Ukraine - hunting singular targets with little cost to counter-measures.

May their batteries run empty after these wars...

*China should make it with plastic and looks like a shark in the US radar and sonar*

Another great analysis! Underwater communication tech is essential for unmanned and regular submarines, especially SSBNs. But I kind of doubt the current Unmanned Submarine Drones configuration can make any suicide attack on a moveable target, maybe attack ship berthing at the harbor and more like an underwater cruise missile.

they need to give the mini sub super cavitation abilities. I think with two or three solid propellants for propulsion to escape. So the mini sub would super cavitate into enemy submarines range..fire their torpedoes. Then super cavitate out with the longer range solid propellant.

That's probably what the US Navy submarine USS Connecticut ran into in the South China Sea last October. As they say, play stupid games, win stupid prizes.

Is this the reason for the USS Connecticut hitting the underwater mountain story?

A Submarine is a big chunk of Metal surrounded by Water. Easy to detect. Sonar. Whales communicate over 1000 s of Miles. The drone can detect Submarines easy over large distances.

so this is a modern Kaiten in some ways. can be relatively cheap to produce compared to full sized subs, saturate the south china seas and US will have a hard time entering as a saturation attack with these is a death sentence to surface combatants even with all the counter measures.

Any idea how long the subs can operate before it needs to be recharged. It'll be great if they can be used as surveillance vessels. China can mass produce them. Even the most powerful submarine will find it hard to handle a swarm of smaller submarines.

I read the following somewhere, can't remember where. The claim is supposed to come from a Chinese naval research paper. You can try to find more info on China's claim that it is possible to build an unmanned long-range nuclear-armed and nuclear-powered sub that can reach close to the shore of the US mainland. Before reaching the mainland it can activate the nuclear warhead from this unmanned sub. Try to find out if this claim is a possibility?
