if u wanna really cheese it and get all the chitin, once you hear the last groan just save ur world logout and log back in. The Laviethan will still be there and u can get the rest without it sinking:)

Pro tip: Do not get back to your ship panicking when he starts to sink; before mining eat a lot of stamina food, mine as much as you can, and then when the Leviathan is gone and has sunken, you can safely swim to your ship. This way, you get a lot more barnacles. The Leviathan doesn't do any damage; it's just water.

omg I KNEW this was something fishy as I was sailing past it. It was very tempting to explore but I had died so many times exploring that I passed on it. Might have to go back now.

I found that, if left undisturbed, you can mark their place on your map. This works for serpents as well. They will be there again when you return.

I never did try to go back to see if they respawn though.

A simple way to get as much chitin before it goes under is to carefully aim your swing to hit 2 barnacles at the same time. Saves you time and stamina for more chitins. And if you start mining from the furthest side of the leviathan, you inch your way back to your boat as you mine each one, this way, when it does start to sink, your boat will always be nearby.

I'm imagining being the Leviathan, surfacing to get some air after seeing some silhouette near where you wanna surface/surfacing somewhere and seeing a weird thing pull up, feeling something land on your back, then proceeding to kill some of the parasites hitching a ride on your back for you.

Kinda like the shorts of that one lobster fishing guy but reversed, size wise.

This thing creeped me out the first time I came across it. Was super careful, checking map to make sure it wasnt actual land, keeping distance on my boat in case it moved, shoot it with an arrow. I really didnt want to lose my boat stocked up with food and all my gear

They are rare, but only when you're first looking for them. In tje late game, theyre everywhere

if you farm all the chitin on the leviathan then log out and back in it reappears allowing you to farm it several times. Sometimes up to 6 times.

I’ve found all but the Ashland’s, bases in most biomes and still haven’t found one of these leviathan turtles 😭
