The most perfect voice in music. Ella recorded several "Songbooks", each devoted to the work of a major songwriter, including Duke Ellington.

One of my favorite shows: Mt.Hood Jazz festival, Gresham, Oregon. And Miss Fitzgerald, after recently losing a leg to diabetes, still came out to close it... Sat on a chair and gave us a great set! And Duke's recognized by the Guinness Book as the most prolific songwriter ever-- written at home, on trains, in hotel rooms ( A room with a piano was always ready for him, ). Some would be penned just for a particular show and never be played again. What a duo, Thanks Maggie for showing people what REAL music is.

I had the great fortune to see Ella live in the early '80s. (My cat is named after her.) With Oscar Peterson as the opening act. Its still a life highlight. Thank you for sharing.

Stevie Wonder's "Sir Duke" is a tribute to Ellington - and includes the line "With a voice like Ella's ringing out / There's no way the band could lose!"

The part of Ellington's solo that you called out was when he started playing his hit "Satin Doll" over the chords for "It Don't Mean A Thing." It was an in-joke for Ellington fans.

Ella Fitzgerald was an incredibly wonderful & was most definitely "the Queen of Jazz". She was a blessing & gift to us.

I read Dukes Biography Book by the late Terry Teachout 2013. "Duke: A Life of Duke Ellington" and highly recommend it. in this performance Duke temporarily went to one of his other tunes in his solo as a joke in this, the song is called Satin Doll. If they put auto tune to this, they would mess it up so bad it would sound like total sh*t.

Question for you. Have you ever been in a situation where you were in an airport or mall and someone randomly play an opera piece you know and started singing it

Does anyone see a similarity between the way Duke Ellington and Thelonious Monk plays the Piano? A sense of space and a percussive style.

Maggie appreciate your knowledge of music, I was a music teacher in schools. Your preference for Early Jazz shows some class most young people do NOT understand due to non exposure by the media.and peer pressure. Try the Band Tuba Skinny out of New Orleans for early jazz, ragtime and blues...I saw them live and got to talk to them at a concert in Michigan last year. The cornet player Shaye Cohn, [the leader] is really a classical pianist turned early jazz musician, and plays other instruments as well. . Her dad is a jazz guitarist, her grandfather [played in and arranged for Woody Herman's band. Her mother is Japanese and is a pianist and jazz singer. Just find them on youtube, you WON'T regret it. Your are oozing nothing but talent and personality, the world is better with you around educating people about music of almost any kind. Sometimes you bust this old man up laughing.

How about reviewing Dooley Wilson and the music he performed in “Casablanca”, he was Sam the piano player. To me, he doesn’t get the praise he deserves.
