What will it take to stop Russia’s President Vladimir Putin? Few have seen his wrath as closely as American-born British financier Bill Browder, who was the largest foreign investor in Russia until investigations led by his lawyer Sergei Magnitsky exposed massive corruption and misconduct by Russian officials leading all the way to Putin. After Magnitsky's murder in a Moscow jail, Browder continued to advocate for justice, becoming Putin's next target, a story he tells in his latest book "Freezing Order" and in this Book Talk with "Doorstep" co-hosts Tatiana Serafin and Nikolas Gvosdev.

Mr. Browder: Indeed Danske Bank is the number one launderer for Russia and it is amazing to see how Danske used their branches in the Baltics to facilitate. One branch in Estonia had 30 Billon Euro go through a clients account over a 3 yr. period. The bank had never met the client or asked what business the client was in. All funds ever going through the account originated from Russia and Nort Korea. And questions were asked.

It hurts to watch and hear the heart-rending experience of Bill Browder, not so much in Russia, but the apathy he faces where he expects support. The closing remarks by Tatiana Serafin is perhaps telling. She said "...she enjoyed reading Freezing Order.. ". I don't want to criticise that but was the book meant for enjoyment, entertainment or serious self realization of evil around us? That comment was to me reflective of general apathy in our world today. Secondly, I commend you, Bill Browder for the courage, tenacity and moral obligation you feel convicted of, to put to an end to these evil practices globally. However, how can you expect this to succeed based on "morality and ethics"? The world we live in has lost those 2 important ingredients. In some cultures, I wonder whether they even exist! Politics and greed for power and money throws all restraint out of the window, as you have noticed in the US itself. A more compelling motivation needs to be found before we annihilate ourselves in quest for power through oppressing one another. Finally, am an old woman, a retired UN staff from Africa. I want to say what you are attempting is only a tip of the iceberg. You have a long road ahead to try and correct human rights, etc and - you are not alone! Many of us are working in our small ways to do what we can. You are one of us. I pray for courage, strength and stamina for you to keep doing what is right. I commend your wife supporting you in this endeavour.

Given that the book Crime in Progress largely validates the importance of the Magnitsky act, has Glen Simpson ever publicly or privately expressed regret about his role in supporting the Kremlin's misinformation campaign to blame Browder and Magnitsky for the $230 million tax heist?
