First crash test dummy designed to protect women – BBC News

A team of Swedish engineers have developed the first crash test dummy designed on the body of the average woman.

Since the 1970s, crash test dummies - mechanical surrogates of the human body - have been used to determine car safety.

The technology is used to estimate the effectiveness of seatbelts and safety features in new vehicle designs.

Until now the most commonly used dummy has been based on the average male build and weight.

Women represent about half of all drivers and are more prone to injury in like-for-like accidents.

I want to see a report in ten years to see if this dummy helped reduce whiplash in women.

It's almost like men and women are different. Who would have thought of that?

Probably has taken this long because it's only now that a female engineer is leading a safety design-team!

BBC admitted men and women are different 😂 how about that

Redacted.

Maybe next we will have seat belts that are designed to fit women. A seat belt that cuts across your neck instead of your chest does not seem very safe.

Wow, are women supposed to feel thrilled by this very belated feature?
What of pharmaceuticals only tested on men as well?

So, now we can speak plainly of an anatomy that is specifically male and female?

You guys never cease to amaze me. My forehead hurts.

Are women's seatbelts going to be different now?

What the hell were they doing all this time testing just male dummies?

Imagine the outburst if the genders were reversed

But they say “there are dummies of different weights, ages, and sizes”. Would of them not also be close to an “average female”?

This is the way everything in - at least western civilization- society. Like how anomalies in health are defined. All after a young healthy male. This is why hospitals even now struggle with how to recognise and treat women's heart disease, bc everything (like EKG, drug doses and treatments) is different from the "normal" - male - way. I'm, as a Swedish person, happy this car crash dummie business is straightening up in Sweden. but did it have to take this long time for the car industry to think clearly? Volvo, Saab, guys? You started your businesses in Sweden so many decades ago? You used to be all for saftey?
