Creating virtual COM ports with com0com

We sometimes want to set up virtual COM ports to allow synchronization between SDRuno and other logging or decoding software. Here we show how to set this up using the free software com0com.

When I do it, it shows "COM#" for each in the pair. I can rename it and it shows up in device manager but as a pair, not individual. Can't connect to them at all. I guess its not compatible with Windows 10 x64.

In the video you use com 5 for SDRuno and would CSV User List then be com 6? Does it need a com port? Also, if you had other programs, would they also be com 6? How does this work? I wish you had followed through on that. I know this was about setting up, but I need the punch line (examples). Then all this makes sense.

I downloaded com0com and installed it ok but in the setup for virtual port pair 1 it shows COM# and COM# instead of COM1 and COM2.
what did I do wrong and how do I fix it.
Thanks, Mike

Hi, I've used com0com for some time with SDRUNO and WXTOIMG for polar weather satellite reception. SDRUNO frequency is controlled from WXTOIMG. I thought I would tryout VSPE 64 bit on Win 10, I discovered that WXTOIMG cannot find the set com port with VSPE. Even if I reverse Com port numbers in the 2 programs, WXTOMG still fails to connect. A terminal program in place of WXTOIMG works fine and can send commands to SDRUNO that are executed. So it seems VSPE has a problem working with older software or has a bug. VSPE is set as default null modem pin config too and the com pair does show in windows Device Manager. I liked the idea that with VSPE one can choose your own com port numbers. ANY ideas ???

As mentioned by others, this does not seem to work for Windows11 64 bit. Something to do with needing "signature". Matthew John Crittenden suggests somehow turning off a signing requirement in the BIOS....Is that safe? Thanks for the help!

I am getting closer. You have to have already installed .NET before the install will work as the video. Now I get the setup screen but instead of port numbers, I get # instead of a number like the video.

Seems this is working fine with only one VRX. But what if you want to control 2 VRX independently from each other through omni-rig ? I installed two com0com virtual Com Port sets. COM1/2 and COM3/4. assigned COM1 to VRX0 and COM3 to VRX1. In omni-rig I set Rig1 to COM2 and Rig2 to COM4 (TS-480). Now when I start the controlling Software0 both VRX follow only Rig1. No control from Software1 over VRX1. Has this been tested and found working for you ?

I still don't know the use of com0com. i was mucking around for a bit and became clueless.

Lets say I Have COM1, having my serial data coming in . I need 2 Apps to simultaneously connect to COM1, which is not possible,

So I create COM2 and COM3 virtual ports, But how to instruct the com0com that

COM1 => COM2
COM1 => COM3

?

I was really excited to see this. But unless I missed the fine print, this is only for Windows 7 . At any rate it does not install properly on windows 10.

Hey, it seems your file is loaded with adware, just a heads up.

This will not work with Windows 10 because Windows 10 requires signed drivers. The signed driver provided by com0com is old and does not apply to Windows 10. Do not try to circumvent signed driver requirement as it is a very important security feature.

The author of com0com needs to proved a signed driver specific to Windows 10. Until he does this I would not attempt any work around.
