'Dobrý král Václav' - 'Good King Wenceslas' - Czech Christmas Carol - Česká koleda

"Good King Wenceslas" is a popular English carol sung on the occasion of the feast of St. Stephen (December 26). The carol was first published in 1853, the music is based on the 13th-century spring carol "Tempus adest floridum" and the author of the text is John Mason Neale, who based his text off of the poem by Wenceslas Alois Svoboda.

The version before you is one of several Czech translations of the English carol. Where Neale got the basis for the story of his carol was unknown for some time, because it is not a typical scene from the life of a Czech saint. In the Czech Republic, the prevailing opinion was that it was an original English take on the subject of St. Wenceslas, while in England, where the cult of this saint was not so well known, it was believed that it was based on original Czech medieval legends. It was only later revealed that it was actually a translation of a poem written by the Czech poet and playwright Václav Alois Svoboda and published in 1847 in three languages ​​(Czech, Latin and German) under the title "Sankt Wenceslaw und Podiwin".
