So he can't cook entrees or breakfast correctly but he made that cake look gorgeous. Which, kind of makes sense. Baking is way more scientific than cooking. Baking needs measurements to be precise. Cooking relies a lot on subjectivity and other conditions.

I know a good part of the joke is that Bender doesn't have a sense of taste and so doesn't know how food is supposed to be like, but he won 3rd place in the sausage-making contest and won the cook-off against Elzar, as well as learned to imitate the Donbot's recipe for meatballs. He definitely has some amount of skill with it.
